Three Common Myths About Maternity Photoshoots

Professional maternity photography in Chicago, artistic studio pregnancy portrait with water reflection, high-key maternity session Chicago IL.

As a Chicago maternity photographer, I talk to expecting mothers every single day. While they all want beautiful photos to remember their pregnancy, many hesitate to book a session because of common fears and misconceptions. "I feel awkward," "I don't know what to do with my hands," or "I'm just not photogenic" are things I hear constantly.

Let’s debunk the three most common myths about maternity photoshoots and uncover the truth behind a professional portrait experience.

Myth 1: “I need to know how to pose” The Truth:

You don’t need an ounce of modeling experience! One of the biggest fears expecting mothers have is looking awkward in front of the camera. As a professional maternity photographer in Chicago, my job is to guide you through the entire session. I will direct your posture, show you exactly where to place your hands, adjust your dress for the most flattering drape, and suggest movements that feel natural. Your only job is to relax and let me handle the posing.

Myth 2: “I’m not photogenic” The Truth:

Being "photogenic" is a myth! Beautiful, magazine-worthy maternity photos are not about you having experience in front of a camera; they are the result of professional lighting, flattering camera angles, and a supportive atmosphere. In my downtown Chicago studio, I use specialized lighting techniques designed to softly contour your body, highlight your glowing baby bump, and create a sophisticated, elegant look. Combined with professional hair and makeup (which we offer in-studio), I promise you will be amazed at how beautiful you look in your portraits.

Myth 3: “It’s too early (or too late) for a maternity photoshoot” The Truth:

While the ideal time for a maternity photoshoot is typically between 28 and 32 weeks (when your bump is beautifully round but you still feel reasonably comfortable and energetic), there is no strict rule! If you missed that window and are at 36 weeks, it is absolutely not too late. We can still create timeless and elegant images. On the flip side, some mothers prefer to shoot earlier if they are expecting multiples. The right time is whenever you feel ready to document this journey.

Pregnancy Isn’t About Perfection It’s about capturing a fleeting, once-in-a-lifetime moment you’ll cherish forever. Don't let myths and fears stop you from preserving these memories.
