Best Time for a Maternity Photoshoot (28–32 Weeks)

Maternity photoshoot

If you’re wondering, “When should I schedule my maternity photoshoot?” you’re not alone. This is one of the most common questions I get from expecting moms. In most cases, my answer is simple: 28–32 weeks is the best time for maternity photos.

As a maternity photographer in Chicago, I’ve found that this timeframe offers the perfect balance between a beautifully defined baby bump and how you feel physically during the session.

Why 28–32 Weeks Is the Sweet Spot

Around 28–32 weeks, your belly usually has that round, “camera-ready” shape that photographs beautifully in both close-up portraits and full-body images. At the same time, most moms still feel comfortable enough to pose, walk, change outfits, and enjoy the photoshoot without needing constant breaks.

What makes 28–32 weeks ideal?

  • Your bump photographs clearly. It looks great in fitted dresses, flowing gowns, and even casual jeans-and-shirt looks.

  • You’re typically more comfortable. Posing, standing, and outfit changes often feel easier than they do later in pregnancy.

  • Less scheduling stress. After 32–34 weeks, energy levels can drop, swelling becomes more common, and some babies arrive earlier than expected.

Earlier Than 28 Weeks

Yes, you can absolutely do a maternity photoshoot earlier, especially if you prefer a more subtle bump and a minimal, modern look. Just keep in mind that during a first pregnancy, the bump may be less noticeable between 20–27 weeks, depending on angles and outfits.

If You’re 34+ Weeks

You didn’t miss your chance. A late pregnancy photoshoot can still be stunning — it just requires a slightly different approach:

  • Choose 1–2 outfits instead of multiple changes

  • Include more seated or relaxed poses

  • Take short breaks whenever needed

Comfort always comes first, and good pacing makes a big difference.

First vs. Second (or Third) Pregnancy

With second or third pregnancies, many moms start showing earlier. In these cases, 26–30 weeks can also be a great window. That said, 28–32 weeks still works beautifully as long as you’re feeling good.

When to Book Your Session

Even though the ideal time to shoot is later, I recommend booking your maternity photoshoot around 20–24 weeks. This gives you better availability and allows plenty of time to plan your session in a relaxed, stress-free way.
