Plus Size Maternity Photoshoot in Chicago: Confident, Beautiful, and Completely You

Being pregnant and plus size means you get to walk into a studio that already knows how to light you, pose you, and celebrate you, so you look and feel like the most beautiful version of yourself. If you have ever scrolled through gorgeous maternity photos and thought, "those are stunning, I want that too," stay with us. It absolutely can be you. And this guide shows you exactly how we make it happen.

We photograph moms of every shape and size in our private downtown Chicago studio, and the reaction we hear most often, almost every single time, is three words: "That's really me?" Yes. That is the whole reason we do this. Below, we walk through what to wear, how posing actually works, how our wardrobe fits and flatters real curves, and how we make sure you leave with images you are proud to hang on the wall.

The Photos You'll Be So Glad You Have

In all our years behind the camera, we have never once heard a mom say she regretted doing her maternity session. What we hear is the opposite, and we hear it often: "I wish I had done it." The cost and the couple of hours fade from memory within a week. The photos you never took are the only thing you cannot get back, because pregnancy is one of the very few chapters of your life you truly cannot re-shoot. The weeks pass, the bump is gone, and what is left is either a rushed phone selfie in the bathroom mirror or a set of images you will treasure for the rest of your life.

And here is the part that matters most. One day your child will look at these photos. They will not be measuring your size. They will not notice the one thing you felt self-conscious about. They will see the person who carried them, who waited for them, who loved them before they ever arrived. That is all they will ever see. To the person who matters most, you are already the most beautiful woman in the world, and these photos are how you hand that feeling down.

You do not need to change a single thing before your session. You do not need to wait until you feel more "ready." You just need to show up as you are.

What to Wear for a Plus Size Maternity Photoshoot

The best outfit is the one that makes you feel like yourself. And a few thoughtful choices photograph beautifully on a fuller figure. The good news: you do not have to source most of it. Let's break it down.

Flowing fabric, in your color. Soft draped fabric is one of the most flattering maternity looks there is, because you control exactly what it reveals and what it softens, and it flows beautifully under studio light. In our studio we keep fabrics in a range of colors, and we will help you choose the shade that suits your skin and your vision, whether that is soft pink, clean white, gold, or dramatic black.

Capes for a true work-of-art look. We also keep a selection of capes in the studio, the kind of pieces that turn a portrait into a real work of art. Paired with a simple base, a cape reads powerful and elegant, and it drapes beautifully around a fuller figure.

Fitted, when you want a defined shape. A stretchy fitted gown that hugs the bump does not hide you, it shapes you. Skimming your curves actually reads more elegant and more slimming on camera than disappearing under something loose and boxy.

Your own jeans and a fitted top. Never underestimate this one. Well-fitting jeans with a fitted top or a soft white tee are a clean, modern, honest look, and they always work. Bring them from home if you want something that already feels like you. It is also the easiest look to coordinate if your partner or older kids are joining.

Colors that flatter on camera. Deep, rich tones are your friend: wine, emerald, chocolate, navy, and classic black are timeless and slimming. Soft neutrals like cream and beige are just as beautiful and keep the focus on you and your bump.

One defined line. Even in the softest, flowiest look, keep one line visible, a wrist, a bare shoulder, the curve of the bump, so the eye has a shape to follow. That single detail is what keeps a relaxed look from ever reading shapeless.

What to skip: boxy shapes that add bulk, heavy busy prints, and large logos. They fight your figure and pull the eye away from your face and your bump.

Posing Is Everything, and We Handle All of It

This is the part that changes everything, so read it twice: you will not have to figure out a single pose on your own. We direct you the entire time. We know precisely which angles flatter a curvier figure, where to place your hands, how to lengthen your neck, how to shift your weight, and how to turn so the studio light does the heavy lifting. Almost every "bad" photo a woman has ever hated came down to poor lighting, a flat angle, and nobody guiding her. Those three things are exactly what we control.

You need zero experience. Not one bit. Some of the most nervous moms who walk in, the ones who tell us on the phone that they "hate every photo of themselves," are the ones who tear up at their gallery. Because it turns out they were never the problem. The lighting and direction were.

The Wardrobe Is Built to Fit and Flatter

Our maternity sessions include a designer wardrobe styled to fit and flatter a bump, so you can try pieces on in a private changing room while we help you choose what feels best on you. Fabrics, gowns, capes, we style each look on your body, in the color that suits you. And if there is a piece you already love and feel most confident in, you are always welcome to bring your own. Some moms feel most at home in something from their own closet, and that is completely right. There is no single "correct" way to do this. There is only what makes you feel beautiful.

Retouching That Looks Like You, Not Someone Else

Our retouching is magazine quality, and it is honest. We gently soften the things that tend to bother expecting moms, swelling in the hands and face, a bit of a double chin from the angle, tired eyes, while keeping you looking exactly like you. When you look at these photos in ten years, you should see yourself, glowing.

Your Honest Questions, Answered

"I've never liked how I look in photos." You are far from alone, and here is the reframe that matters: most photos we dislike are not about us at all. They are unplanned, badly lit, shot from a low or flat angle, with no one guiding the moment. A professional session is the opposite of every quick phone photo you have ever cringed at. Good light, the right angle, and gentle direction change everything, and that is our entire job.

"I'm worried I'll look bigger." The right fit, the right pose, and studio lighting are all designed to flatter. We show the bump and shape the rest, and again and again moms are genuinely surprised by how elegant and slim they look. This is not luck. It is technique.

"What if I don't like the photos?" We guide you the whole way and show you images as we go, so there are no surprises at the end. You will watch the direction working in real time and feel your own confidence build during the session.

"Can my partner, kids, or pet be in some photos?" Yes, all of them. Some of the most tender maternity images include a partner's hands on the bump or an older child leaning in. And of course, plenty of moms want a few just of them, too.

"When should I book?" Aim for 28 to 32 weeks, when your bump is beautifully round and you are usually still comfortable enough to enjoy the session. You can reserve your date from around 20 weeks so you get the slot you want. Hair and makeup are not required, but they hold up well under studio light and are worth adding, and we recommend arriving about an hour early.

If you want to be fully pampered, our hair and makeup team can build your look before we start. To see everything a session includes, visit our maternity photography in Chicago page, and find more answers on our FAQ page.
