Maternity Photoshoot With Your Husband in Chicago: Why He Belongs in the Frame

"I'd love a maternity photoshoot, but my husband hates being photographed." That might be the sentence we hear most often before a couples session. And here's the thing: the men who walk in most reluctant often walk out asking when they can see the photos.

A maternity photoshoot with your husband in Chicago doesn't require him to be photogenic, experienced, or even enthusiastic at the start. It requires him to show up. We handle everything else. This article covers what he should wear, how posing actually works for partners, and why these photos matter more than either of you might think right now.

Why These Photos Matter for Both of You

Pregnancy photos with just mom are beautiful. But years from now, your child will look at these pictures and want to see both parents waiting for them.

There's another reason, and it's about him. This is his season too. He's been at the appointments, felt the kicks, assembled the crib at 11 pm. A maternity session is one of the very few moments where that waiting gets captured. Most dads don't ask for these photos. Almost all of them are glad they exist.

And practically: couple frames give you range. Tender close-ups, laughing candids, dramatic silhouettes of two people and a bump. A solo session is a portrait; a couples session is a story.

"He Doesn't Know How to Pose." Neither Does Anyone

Here's what surprises most couples at our Chicago studio: nobody is expected to know anything. We guide every single frame. Where to put his hands, where to look, when to lean in, when to laugh. Posing guidance is built into every maternity photoshoot we do, and partners need zero experience.

The formula that works for reluctant husbands:

  • We start with the two of you together. His job is simply to hold you. That's it. No solo modeling.

  • Most of his "poses" are just actions. Hug her from behind. Kiss the bump. Whisper something that makes her laugh for real. The camera does the rest.

  • The shyness lasts about five minutes. Husbands are stiff and self-conscious only at the very start. Then they relax and forget the camera is there.

What husbands say afterward, almost word for word: "That was way easier than I expected."

What to Wear for a Couples Maternity Photoshoot in Chicago

Good news for you: our designer maternity wardrobe is included at no extra cost. Gowns, flowing fabrics, angel wings, feather capes. After booking, you get access to the online wardrobe catalog and pick the looks you love before the session.

For him, it's simple. The goal is to frame you, not compete with you:

  • The classic: jeans and a plain white t-shirt or a white shirt. Works with almost every gown.

  • The elegant: all black, or a black shirt with dark trousers, for dramatic and silhouette looks.

  • The soft: beige and neutral tones if your looks lean warm and minimal.

Skip large logos and busy patterns. Put his outfits together at home in advance, matched to the gowns you picked from the online catalog, and come with everything ready. That way the session starts right away, and no studio time is spent deciding what he'll wear. Depending on the package, you'll have 2 to 4 outfit changes, and there's a private changing room right in the studio.

How a Couples Maternity Session Works

Timing. The best window for a maternity photoshoot is 28–32 weeks: the bump is beautifully round and you still feel comfortable posing. Booking from around week 20 gives you the best choice of dates.

Session length. Our Classic package is one hour with 2 looks; Deluxe, the most popular for couples, is two hours with 4 looks, which leaves room for solo portraits of you, couple frames, and playful candids without rushing. You can compare our maternity packages to see what fits.

Hair and makeup. Not required, but under studio light professional makeup makes a real difference in the final images. Our hair stylist and makeup artist are separate specialists, and this is booked in advance together with your session. You can see the options on our glam page.

The rest of the family. Kids of any age and pets are welcome. Some couples bring the future big sibling for a few frames and keep the rest of the session just for the two of them.

After the shoot. You receive all the successful frames from the session plus a set of magazine-quality retouched images. Retouching is gentle and natural: we soften what you ask us to soften and keep you looking like you.

What If He's Really, Truly Reluctant?

We believe in honesty, so here's the honest answer: he doesn't have to be in every frame. If your husband doesn't enjoy being photographed, we won't push him. We'll work with him for just 15–20 minutes, make a few couple frames to keep, and dedicate the rest of the session to your solo portraits.

And if he'd rather skip it entirely? A solo maternity session is still absolutely worth doing. But show him this article first. The part about the first five minutes usually helps.
