First Birthday Photoshoot in Chicago: The Complete Cake Smash Guide
Your baby is about to turn one. Somehow twelve months disappeared between the hospital photo and those first wobbly steps across the living room. If you're already thinking about how to mark it, you're not alone — the first birthday is the milestone parents most want to hold onto, and a cake smash photoshoot is the joyful, slightly messy way to do it.
If you've never done a studio session with a baby this age, the idea can feel daunting. It isn't. As a first birthday photographer in Chicago, we build the whole session around your baby's comfort and your peace of mind, so you can relax and just watch it happen. Whatever mood your child shows up in that day is exactly what we're there to capture.
This guide walks you through everything we get asked about: the best age to book, what time of day works, what your baby should wear, the cake question, and how we keep the whole thing calm and fun for you.
What Is a Cake Smash, Exactly?
If the term is new to you, a cake smash is simple: your baby gets their own little cake and full permission to dig into it while we photograph the whole happy mess. There's no script and nothing to get right — the joy is in the unscripted reactions, from the first cautious poke to frosting-covered fists in the air. It's one of the favorite sessions we do as a baby milestone photographer in Chicago.
Most sessions run in two easy stages. First, a few clean portraits in a styled outfit, before any cake appears. Then the smash itself, when we hand over the cake and let your baby take the lead. The result is a set of photos that captures exactly who your one-year-old is right now.
The Best Age for a 1st Birthday Photoshoot
The sweet spot for a first birthday and cake smash session is around 10.5 to 11 months. There's a real reason we recommend this window. By then most babies sit steadily and reach for the cake on their own, separation anxiety is usually a little easier, and many aren't walking yet — so they stay on set instead of toddling off every ten seconds. It also leaves enough time to have your images ready before the actual birthday party.
You can absolutely book the session on your baby's real birthday if you'd like it to be part of the celebration. And if you're already a bit past the one-year mark, don't worry — it's never too late for cake.
The Single Most Important Detail: Timing the Day
If there's one thing that makes or breaks a session, it's this: book around your baby's best hours. A well-rested, well-fed baby is a happy baby, and a happy baby gives you the photos you're picturing.
For most families, 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM is the magic window — after a nap and a meal, but before the afternoon tiredness sets in. If your little one is down to one nap a day, aim for 30 to 60 minutes after they wake up. The quick rule we give every parent: shoot after a meal and after a nap. It makes everything smoother.
Because our studio is private and available any time of day, we schedule your session for whenever your baby is usually happiest — not whenever a slot happens to be free. If your little one needs a break mid-session, we take one.
What Your Baby Should Wear
You have two easy options. You're welcome to choose an outfit from our curated collection of baby clothes, picked specifically for first birthday sessions, or bring your own. Either way, we lean toward simple, light, neutral tones — they highlight your baby's expressions and blend beautifully with the styling and décor instead of fighting it.
One important note: bring a separate outfit just for the cake smash — frosting gets everywhere. And pack a clean change of clothes for afterward. Easy-on, easy-off pieces make the switch painless.
Plan on about three looks in all — two outfits, plus the separate cake smash outfit if you're doing the smash. The exact pace depends on your baby's mood that day.
Real Cake or Faux? Both Work
This one comes up a lot. You're welcome to bring your own real cake — that's totally fine. We also keep faux cakes in the studio for the photos, so a real one is never required. A soft, smashable cake with real buttercream works best for an actual smash; skip fondant and anything rock-hard.
Here's a tip most parents don't think of: let your baby try cake or frosting at home a few days beforehand. If the taste and texture are already familiar, they're far more likely to dig in happily instead of recoiling at this strange new thing on the day.
What to Bring (and What We Provide)
We keep your packing list short on purpose. From you, it helps to have:
A separate cake smash outfit, plus a clean change of clothes for afterward
A changing kit and a feeding kit
White baby puffs — our go-to snack for keeping little ones engaged
A pacifier, if your baby uses one
Any sentimental item you'd love in the photos
Everything else is on us. Your session includes the full styling and décor — "ONE" letters, cake stands, themed baby backdrops, child-sized chairs, rocking horses, props, and outfits. We have a private changing area, and we handle all the cleanup, so scrubbing frosting off the floor is never your job. You can see exactly what's included in our first birthday packages.
What Happens If Your Baby Gets Fussy
Completely normal, and we plan for it. After years of photographing babies, we use gentle techniques to settle them and catch real smiles, and we take breaks whenever they're needed — for feeding, outfit changes, cuddles, or just a minute to reset. A pacifier nearby helps too. There's no rushing and no stopwatch.
A couple of honest things worth knowing. Any baby acne, small rashes, or scratches are gently smoothed out in retouching, so you never need to stress about a stray blemish on the day. And if your baby wakes up genuinely unwell, we'll reschedule — a sick baby won't enjoy the session, and it keeps the other little ones who visit the studio safe too.
Why a Cake Smash Is Better in the Studio Than at Home
You can absolutely do a cake smash at home — but there's a reason parents book a studio for the one-year photos specifically. The difference shows up in every frame.
In the studio you get controlled, flattering light instead of whatever the kitchen window happens to offer that day, and clean styled backdrops with no laundry basket or clutter in the corner. As a cake smash photographer in Chicago, we already have the "ONE" letters, cake stands, child-sized chairs, and props set up and ready, so the look is cohesive instead of improvised. The frosting lands on our floor, not your rug — and we handle every bit of the cleanup.
And maybe the biggest difference: in a private studio you're not juggling setup, baby, and camera all at once. You get to be fully present, laughing along, while we take care of the rest — and the magazine-quality retouching afterward gives you photos you'll frame, send to grandparents, and pull out again years later.
Choosing Your Session
Our first birthday sessions come in a few shapes so you can pick what fits. The Baby Only session covers your one-year-old with studio wardrobe and a couple of backdrops. The Family-included option brings parents and siblings into the frame and adds studio wardrobe for mom. And the Signature session is a longer two hours with more looks, more backdrops, guided posing, and the largest set of retouched images — ideal if you want the full experience without watching the clock. Family members, siblings, and even pets are welcome in any of them; just flag it when you book so we plan for everyone. If you'd love a fuller session built around the whole family, we also work as a family photographer in Chicago — and many of our first birthday families first met us for their maternity session in Chicago during pregnancy.
When you've picked a date, you can book your session in a couple of minutes. And if you'd like more photoshoot tips and ideas before then, our Chicago photography blog is full of them.
