Baby Milestone Photography in Chicago: When to Book Every Session After Maternity
After a maternity session, the most common question we hear is some version of: "What do we do next?"
You've captured the pregnancy. The baby is on the way. And then — in a blur of sleepless nights and new-parent joy — weeks go by and you realize you haven't thought about photos since the hospital.
At Filaneyka Photo Studio in downtown Chicago, we've worked with families for years. We've seen families who planned every milestone and families who looked back wishing they had. This guide covers every session worth booking in baby's first year and beyond — and exactly when to come in for each one.
Newborn Session: Days 1–14 (The Window That Closes Fast)
The newborn window is the shortest in all of baby photography. The ideal time is between day 5 and day 14 of life — and that window matters more than most parents expect.
Here's why: in the first two weeks, babies are still in the "sleepy phase." They curl naturally into the rounded, womb-like positions that make newborn portraits so beautiful. Their skin is soft and smooth. They sleep deeply and can be gently posed without waking.
After two to three weeks, everything shifts. Babies become more alert and harder to settle. The natural curls start to unfold. By week four, the classic newborn look is much harder to achieve.
Book your newborn session before the baby arrives — around weeks 32–36 of pregnancy.
Monthly Milestone Sessions: Months 1–11
One of the most meaningful things you can do in year one is document each month. Not with a quick phone photo — with a real session that captures who your baby is at this exact stage.
Babies change so fast that the difference between month 2 and month 4 is almost unrecognizable side by side. Monthly sessions let you see that progression as a series, not a blur.
What changes month to month:
Months 1–2: Still curled, still mostly sleeping; personality is just beginning to surface
Months 3–4: First real smiles. Tummy time improves. Baby starts reacting to your face
Months 5–6: Rolling over, reaching for objects, much more interactive
Months 7–9: Sitting up, babbling, big expressions and loud opinions
Months 10–11: Pulling to stand, cruising furniture, sometimes first steps
You don't need to come every single month. Some families choose every other month. Either way, the photos tell a story that a single annual session never could.
The 6-Month Session: Halfway There
If you only do one milestone session between newborn and first birthday, make it six months.
At six months, most babies have just learned to sit — or are right on the edge of it. They can hold their head steady, make direct eye contact, and produce the kind of full-face smile that stops a room. They're big enough to look like real little people but still small enough to fit in the crook of your arm.
Six months is also the exact midpoint of year one. The hardest part of the newborn phase is behind you. That deserves to be captured.
At our studio, we start with portraits of your baby solo, then invite parents and siblings to join in for relaxed family portraits. Simple props and clean backdrops keep the focus where it belongs — on your baby's face.
The First Birthday Session: The Biggest Milestone of Year One
No session generates more excitement than the first birthday.
One full year. A sleeping newborn has become a walking, laughing, food-throwing toddler with a full personality. It's the biggest milestone of baby's first year, and it deserves a full session.
The cake smash is the most requested format. A small smash cake goes in front of your baby and we photograph whatever happens next — reactions range from cautious and careful to absolute frosting chaos. Both are perfect. Both are hilarious. Both make photos parents print and frame.
Beyond the cake smash, we do clean portrait shots at the start of the session, before the frosting arrives. Outfit changes are included. Parents and siblings can join for family portraits.
When to book: 4–8 weeks before the birthday. Spring and fall sessions fill up faster than any other time of year.
What to bring: A smash cake from a local bakery, the birthday outfit, and any meaningful props — a "one" banner, balloons, a favorite stuffed animal.
Other Milestones Worth Capturing
First time sitting independently (around months 6–8) When your baby can sit on their own, everything changes in a session. We can photograph them face-forward, at eye level, without a parent holding them up. It's a short window before they're also trying to crawl away — and it produces some of the most natural portraits of year one.
First steps (around months 10–14) Some babies walk at 10 months. Others take until 14 or 15. A photo of your baby mid-toddle — arms out for balance, grin on their face — is something you'll pull out for decades.
After Year One: Annual Sessions
The first birthday is not the end — it's the beginning of a tradition.
Many families come back every year. Not for a specific milestone, but because kids change so much from one birthday to the next. By the time they're ten, you have ten years of consistent portraits that tell a story no school photo could.
Holiday and Themed Sessions: Any Age, Any Time of Year
Some of the most joyful sessions we shoot have nothing to do with developmental milestones. They're tied to the calendar — and they work for any age.
Christmas / Holiday Photoshoots. The most popular themed session of the year. Babies in holiday outfits, soft lights, seasonal props — it works at any age. Book early: November and December fill faster than any other time of year.
Mother's Day. A Mother's Day session is a gift — to yourself, or from your partner and children. Simple, warm portraits of you and your baby at this exact moment in time.
Father's Day. Fathers are usually behind the camera, which means they rarely appear in family photos. A Father's Day session changes that.
